GHODAGHODI LAKE AREA AS AN IMPORTANT BIRD AREA

Globally, the important role of birds in providing ecosystem services, and their aesthetic, cultural, and biodiversity value face many threats. Many species face extinction as a result of habitat destruction, hunting, and pollution of air and water. More recently, the threat of global climate change as a result of anthropogenic carbon emissions places many species under additional pressure. Birds are present in almost every environment, and are highly visible and well known, making them excellent indicator species of environmental health, and as "umbrella' species for habitat conservation. Recognition of these factors has lead to the development of a system of "important Bird Areas" world wide, highlighting regions with special significance for bird conservation, through their biodiversity, uniqueness, or significance for migratory species. A total of 27 IBAs have been identified in Nepal, among which 10 are wetlands ecosystem.
Ghodaghodi Lake is recognizfor a ed as one of these Important Bird Areas for its combination of unique habitat, and the significance of the site number of threatened species. Among the 226 species of bird recorded here, 10 are globally threatened. Ghodaghodi Lake Area is an important habitat for birds in Nepal. It acts as a staging post for migrating wetland birds and is home to both native and overwintering species. A total amount of 140 bird species have been recorded in the lake area, including the globally threatens (vulnerable) “Lesser adjutant” and the near-threatened “Darter”. The area is also a habitat for other endangered and vulnerable mammals and reptiles, including the Bengal tiger, the smooth-coated otter and the mugger crocodile.

Ghodaghodi lake in Kailali is being created as an imperative territory for winged creatures. With characteristic lakes in Kailali drying up, specialists are making endeavors to turn the Ghodaghodi wetland zone into one of the most living spaces of transient as well as household feathered creatures, concurring to conservationists. Ghodaghodi lake is domestic to a few imperiled feathered creature species just like the extraordinary salty woodpecker, the incredible hornbill, vulture, darter and spiked babbler. The lake too invites numerous Siberian feathered creature species for three-four months each winter. These fowls move all the way to Nepal to escape the cruel winter within the northern side of the equator, said Chaudhary. Fowl species like mallard, reddish she ducks, gadwall, Eurasian greenish blue, greenshank, thrushes, flycatcher and booted hawk, among other feathered creature species, fly to Nepal from other nations each winter.
