Many species face extinction as a result of habitat destruction, hunting, and pollution of air and water. More recently, the threat of global climate change as a result of anthropogenic carbon emissions places many species under additional pressure. Birds are present in almost every environment, and are highly visible and well known, making them excellent indicator species of environmental health, and as "umbrella' species for habitat conservation. Recognition of these factors has lead to the development of a system of "important Bird Areas" world wide, highlighting regions with special significance for bird conservation, through their biodiversity, uniqueness, or significance for migratory species.
